You are the God who sees
each little moment of my life
who sees me in my joy
and sees me also in my strife
You are the God who sees
sees all the good and all the wrong
who calls throughout the darkness
whisper sings a glory song
You are the God who sees
my efforts, all my tiny tries
sees the ways i try to serve You
and my screw ups and my sighs
You are the God who sees
through all the brokenness and pain
who sees past all my choices
all the sins that my cells stain
You are the God who sees
each time i take a step brand new
You see each time i crawl
and when i fall You have a view
You are the God who sees
each time i try to do what's right
reach down to pick me up
when once again i fall in flight
You are the God who sees
my private shames and all my wrong
and also sees the blinks of joy
and finds delight in each new song
You are the God who sees
the little victories i claim
who celebrates with me
each time i keep alive the flame
You are the God who sees
the night that so oppresses me
and comes each time to fight
to break new chains and set me free
You are the God who sees
the wolf that’s howling at my door
You saw him on the way and then
You saw him rip and roar
You are the God who sees
when that wolf meets Your holy throne
though i may never see it
never watch his final groan
You are the God who sees
who stands in holiness, untouched
who broke apart Your unity
to send GodMan to us
You are the God who sees
the length and breadth of all my days
with gentleness and patience
lovingkindness guide my ways
You are the God who sees
across the span of my short breath
though i am bound by time
You wait just past this one quick death
You are the God who sees
though to me much remains a mystery
You are the God i seek
over all time and space and history
You are the God who sees
my good and ugly stirred together
who sees the mix that makes me
holds my parts here altogether
You are the God who sees
i might not ever understand
but it is quite enough
to look and see Your strong right hand
I heard this week that Hagar was the first person in the Bible who dared give God a name — El-roi — the God who sees. I’ve been thinking about it all week. How many millions, billions of us has He seen since Hagar sat in despair, crying under that bush as she waited for death? Although I know technically there’s no “since” for Him, being above time. But He sees all of us. Sees us. Really sees us. When so many of us just want to be known. How utterly amazing.
Another poignant, heart-touching poem. Thank you for sharing your gift.
I have always thought of "the God who sees" in the context of Hagar, and it has brought me comfort many, many, many times over the years, but you, however, have expanded it many fold, and have given me much to ponder.
